Basics of Interior Design – Decoration

What is the difference between a home decorator and an interior designer? Today we take the decoration as a basis.

If you weren’t born with the ability to imagine an empty room with furniture, wall hangings or a carpet, don’t be discouraged, this ability can be developed and honed. Learn the basics of interior design, including design principles, decorating styles, and the right strategies for decorating challenges.

Furnishings compared to interior design

Home design and interior design are often confused with each other. Interior design is a profession that requires specialized education and formal training, including interior design, furniture design, and architecture. The interior designer does not have such formal training and focuses on the aesthetics of the space and its surface appearance. Who we want to work with depends on whether structural work is needed or whether we are only looking for space planning and decoration tasks.

Elements of decoration

The first step is to choose the style of the interior. In order to follow the principle of building unity and harmony, we need to come up with a unified theme for the whole home. This can be defined as ordinary instead of formal, traditional instead of contemporary, and so on. From here we can further refine it to a more specific style, such as French, Tuscan or even modern Victorian.

The principle of balance is nothing more than the distribution of visual weight in space. It can be achieved with symmetry, as is customary in traditional spaces, or even asymmetrical balance, as in occasional interiors. Each room should have a focal point (whether based on scale, color, or texture), which in a living room can be, for example, a fireplace or a work of art.

Contrast and variety give the room exclusivity. Keep in mind the “rhythm” of the room by repeating elements of the same color, texture, or pattern, and progressing in size and color.

Choosing a color palette is an essential part of interior design. Although each room may have a different style and color scheme, in most cases it is worth coordinating the colors of the rooms. Let’s consider the right color for a small room , as well as what colors and patterns suit a larger room.

Mixing patterns in interior design is an integral part of interior design. The patterns don’t have to match, but they definitely have to complement each other. This should be done by taking color, size and scale into account.

Tips for decorating

A good interior designer can look at a room and understand what elements work in the room as well as know when something is too much. Some tips in this area can make things easier for you too.

One element that usually requires expert eye is the placement of the pillows. Pillows can have a very good effect on the color composition of the rooms, in some cases they can even become the focal point of the room. However, some tend to go overboard. Let’s not get to the point where we can only sit down by having to move all the pillows over the couch.

Choosing works of art can be important for a room, but we need to carefully consider how to display them. The basic rule is to place the wall hangings at eye level. Similarly, how high we place the chandeliers matters. It is a common mistake to hang the chandelier too high or even directly to the ceiling. Let it down so that as much light as possible enters the room and is immediately noticeable.

Home furnishing is not a cheap hobby and decorative accessories make up a significant part of the budget. If you’re on a tight budget, we have some tips to keep in mind. The two most important pieces of furniture – probably the two most used items at the same time – are the sofa and the bed. It is better to spend more on these pieces. Let’s save on carpets , dining tables and wall pictures. Combining more expensive and cheaper items is one of the lesser-known tricks of the trade, which, if used properly, can create stylish spaces without spending our last forint.
